Pronoun Heroes 4.1

Pronoun Heroes presents a compelling approach to teaching the use of pronouns through an engaging superhero-themed interface. Developed by certified speech-language pathologists and the innovative team at Smarty Ears Apps, the application effectively combines education with entertainment, catering to both learners and busy speech-language pathologists (SLPs).

Designed as a multi-level, multi-player app, Pronoun Heroes encompasses four distinct activities aimed at teaching and reinforcing various pronouns. It covers an array of pronouns including personal subjective, personal objective, demonstrative, possessive, and reflexive types, totaling 19 different pronouns. Notably, two of the activities offer customization options, enabling adults to tailor the therapy sessions to the specific needs of their clients.

How to Use

In Pronoun Heroes, the player in focus is displayed prominently at the top of the screen. For sessions involving multiple players, the active player alternates with each screen transition. Each active player’s correct responses are visually represented via icons corresponding to their avatar. Upon completion of an activity, tapping the “done” button returns users to the main activity page for further engagement.

The app features four specialized areas:

• Where is the Pronoun:

  Users can choose between words or phrases. In the words activity, four superheroes hold signs, and players select which one displays a pronoun. The phrases activity requires users to identify a pronoun within a segmented sentence.

• Which one is not a Pronoun?

  This segment presents players with four superheroes, each holding signs. Participants must identify which sign does not contain a pronoun, facilitating discussions on negation and related language concepts.

• Find the Picture:

  In this customizable activity, players see a pronoun alongside two images and must select the picture that best illustrates the pronoun. Users can personalize this section through settings that allow them to choose specific pronouns for targeting.

• Let’s use Pronouns!

  Users view an image from real life along with a sentence containing a missing word. They must then drag and drop the appropriate pronoun into the blank space.

Customization

Pronoun Heroes enables users to specify one or multiple targeted pronouns in two out of its four activities. This customization facilitates a seamless transition from targeting individual pronouns to comprehensive progress monitoring.

Common Core State Standards

Proper pronoun usage is integral to meeting Common Core State Standards across many states, with expectations outlined by grade level. By grade 1, students should be familiar with personal, possessive, and indefinite pronouns (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1.D). By grade 2, students are expected to utilize reflexive pronouns (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.C), and by grade 3, they should be able to maintain subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement while using possessive pronouns (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.1.F and CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.2.D).
